Under UJALA Scheme, Over 25 Cr Affordable LEDs and Appliances Distributed

When you wish to know about the Ujala Scheme it is Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs that are meant for all.

It is the scheme that is launched by PM Narendra Modi on 1st May 2015 under the Government of India. Ujala scheme was established With the replacement of the Bachat Lamp Yojana which is a combined initiative of the Public Sector, which is undertaken by the Indian Government, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Union Ministry of Power as well as the Electricity Distribution Company.

Objectives of UJALA Scheme

For the promotion of the efficient usage of energy for all, including its consumption, lighting, and savings, the UJALA scheme is also known to be as the LED-based Domestic Efficient Lighting Program or DELP. This is the scheme that is considered the largest program in the world. The LED bulbs would be distributed by the Electricity Distribution Company at subsidized rates to every grid that is connected with a metered connection according to the UJALA scheme.

Implementing UJALA scheme

In terms of the investment as well as the risk factors that are associated, implementation of the UJALA scheme was completed successfully. As a joint contribution of EESL, as well as DISCOM, is how the scheme was implemented.

Few of the outputs that were placed forwards by the UJALA scheme are as follows:

  • Replacement of 200 million ordinary light bulbs by LED bulbs
  • Reduction of a load of 5000 MW
  • Reduction of the emissions that were caused by greenhouse gases at about 79 million tons of carbon dioxide

·The candidates should have the appropriate knowledge about all the government schemes since they are covering for an important part of the UPSC syllabus.

Why choose LED bulbs?

As the light-emitting diode or the LEDs offers better light output with the consumption of only one-tenth of the energy compared to that of any ordinary bulbs is what the UJALA scheme focuses on along with the distribution of the LED bulbs. Distribution of 20W LED tube lights to the consumers which are mainly 50% or more energy-efficient than that of the regular 40W tube lights is what this scheme aims at.

To the adoption of such efficient lighting systems, the high cost of these LEDs has been a barrier here. Overcoming this cost barrier as these LED bulbs are highly efficient with the reduction of load, the greenhouse gas emissions, consumer bills, along with saving the electricity is what the DELP on-bill financing scheme proposes at.

UJALA Scheme in Malaysia

Ujala scheme is the model that is also implemented in Malacca, Malaysia on 6th September 2017 after its successful implementation in India. The Chief Minister of Melaka launched this UJALA scheme to benefit the people of this region.

Reduction in the consumption of electricity for decreasing the burden on the consumers is the major focus area of this scheme. It has also preserved the environment at a global level is what is focused on.

Every household in Malacca will be offered 10 high-quality 9 watts LED bulbs for RM 10 according to the UJALA scheme.

Deriving the benefits of the UJALA scheme

With the help of special counters set up at designated places within the city, the bulbs will be distributed phase-wise. It is through the leaflets, advertisements for the consumers, and posters are how the location of the counters is informed.

What are the documents required to get the LED bulbs?

The documents that are required to get the LED bulbs are as follows:

  • The latest energy consumption bill copy
  • Copy of photo ID proof
  • Copy of residential proof
  • In the case of on-bill financing, cash advance

Addressing the issue of faulty LED bulbs

The average lifespan of the LED bulbs is 4-5 years. EESL offers free of cost replacement for every LED bulb for a single year in case of any defect.

The operation of this model:

  • At 40% of the market price, Energy Efficiency Services Limited distributes the LED bulbs to the households.
  • Total risk coverage is borne by EESL and the total upfront investment.
  • Over 5 years DISCOM pays EESL from the actual energy savings.
  • No subsidy is required from the government
  • On the electricity tariffs, there is no impact.

The world’s largest non-subsidized LED bulb distribution program is now being implemented all across the country with the implementation of the government’s UJALA program in Arunachal Pradesh.

Under the Unnat Jeevan, over 25 crores of LED bulbs have been successfully distributed by the affordable LEDs and Appliances of ALL Ujala program. In addition to these, over 10 lakh energy-efficient fans and over 28 lakh LED tube lights have been distributed.

The Energy Efficiency Services LTD which is a joint venture of PSUs under the Power Ministry in collaboration with various power distribution companies in 29 states and seven Union Territories has implemented this program.

In about every corner of India, this UJALA scheme is being implemented.

The 9-watt LED bulbs available under the UJALA scheme are priced at Rs 70 per unit all across the country while the 20-watt LED tube lights and the BEE 5-star rated energy efficient fans are priced at Rs 220 per unit and Rs 1,200 per unit post the implementation of GST.

It is through the authorized EESL distribution center that the eligible consumers can purchase these appliances.
